Founder and Chairman Emeritus**
1926 to 2025
Raised on a farm in southern Iowa, William C. “Bill” Knapp built a life defined by hard work, vision, and service. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II, returning home with a deep appreciation for leadership, integrity, and community. Those principles guided every chapter of his life.
Bill began investing in real estate in the 1950s and went on to build Iowa Realty into the largest real estate company in the state. In 1992, he founded Knapp Properties, where his leadership helped shape downtown Des Moines, strengthen neighborhoods around Drake University, and bring forward many of the region’s most recognizable developments.
Bill believed that success meant lifting others. He supported countless community organizations, including the Iowa State Fair, Drake University, Meals from the Heartland, the Iowa Veterans Cemetery, and many local nonprofits focused on youth, hunger, housing, and community wellbeing. His philanthropic impact will continue for generations.
Bill was known for his energy, generosity, and ability to bring people together. He mentored young leaders, championed community projects, and inspired teams with his belief that strong communities are built through service and opportunity.
Though Bill has passed away, his influence lives on in the people he inspired, the organizations he strengthened, and the communities he helped build. His legacy continues to guide Knapp Properties as we honor the values he instilled in this company.
